Egypt Tourist Visa Guide for Students of Knowledge Studying Arabic and Quran
For students of knowledge planning to study Arabic and Quran in Egypt, understanding the tourist visa process is essential for a smooth arrival. Egypt offers a rich environment for Islamic studies, making it a popular destination for short-term students. This guide provides a straightforward overview of how to obtain a tourist visa, its requirements, and extension options to make your stay more convenient.
For students who prefer to have their visa arranged in advance, the e-visa provides flexibility with both single-entry and multiple-entry options, suitable for students traveling in and out of Egypt or staying slightly longer.
Application Process: Apply online through the official Egyptian e-visa portal. You’ll need to provide passport details, upload a photo, and pay the visa fee (usually $25 for a single-entry visa and $60 for a multiple-entry visa).
Processing Time: The e-visa typically takes 2–7 business days to process.
Validity: The e-visa is valid for up to 90 days from the issue date and allows a 30-day stay per entry. The multiple-entry option may be beneficial if you plan on returning home or traveling to nearby countries during your study period.

Students who intend to stay longer or want a secured visa before travel can apply at an Egyptian embassy or consulate in their home country.
Application Process: Contact your local Egyptian embassy or consulate to confirm the application process, as it may vary. This option is best for students who want the assurance of a pre-approved visa or may need flexibility for visa extensions.
Processing Time: The consular visa process usually takes a few days to a week or even more than a week, depending on the embassy.
Additional Requirements: Some embassies may ask for proof of travel funds or an itinerary, so check with the specific consulate for details.

If you find that you need more time to complete your studies, you can apply for a tourist visa extension in Egypt. The common way of extending your tourist visa is through renting a house and obtaining a notarized house lease.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
Where to Extend: Visa extensions are typically handled at the Passport and Immigration Office, known as the Abbaseya branch or the New Cairo branch.
Note: The Visa comes in the form of a card known as a Foreign Residence Card and not a stamp on your passport.
Abbaseya Branch: Address - 12 Al Abbaseya Al Mekanekeya, As Sarayat, El Weili, Cairo Governorate 11517: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uhwCu6EFz4pYEHDn8
New Cairo Branch: Address - XFGM+48F, Industrial Area, New Cairo 3, Cairo Governorate 4716160: https://maps.app.goo.gl/3TU2c4U9AtLHYvWx9
To extend your visa in both the above branches, you’ll need to bring your passport, a notarized house lease, and $150 per person which needs to be exchanged for Egyptian pounds at a bank in Egypt and the stamped bank receipt will be used for your application. Also, make at least two copies of each:
•Passport data page
•Notarized house lease
•Last entry stamp to Egypt
•Current Egyptian visa
In terms of processing, students often use the Abbaseya branch, where many rely on agents due to lengthy wait times and language barriers. This process requires one visit to apply, followed by a week for visa collection. Alternatively, at the New Cairo branch, the process is more organized, requiring only one visit. By paying a small additional fee, you can choose a fast-track option that takes 10 working days (two weeks) for visa collection.
Both passport offices grant visa extensions randomly for either 3 or 6 months, so while you can apply at either the Abbaseya or New Cairo branch, the duration is assigned by the authorities and cannot be chosen by the applicant. Note: If you stay in Egypt for 12 consecutive months on a tourist visa without leaving the country, you must exit Egypt and re-enter to renew and continue your tourist visa.
Prepare Cash: Egypt is cash-based, especially for government fees. Make sure to have USD ready if obtaining the visa on arrival option or intend to extend your visa in Egypt.
Study Programs and Visa Requirements: Some students of knowledge may enroll in short-term language or religious studies programs that provide visa support. Check with your chosen institution, as some centers may offer additional guidance on visa matters.
Know the Customs and Regulations: Familiarize yourself with local cultural norms, particularly around religious studies, dress, and etiquette. Being respectful of customs enhances your experience as a student.
